Suspected gunmen invade Igangan community

The Police Command in Taraba on Sunday confirmed the kidnapping and killing of the Chairman of Ardo Kola Local Government Area of the state, Mr Salihu Dovo, and his Nephew.

DSP David Misal, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Jalingo.

“It’s true, the chairman was abducted by gunmen at his residence in the early hours of Sunday in Jalingo and later killed him in the bush with his brother’s son whose name we are yet to get.

“We have so far arrested one person in connection with the incident and we are hoping that he will give us leading information to enable us to arrest the rest of the killers.

“We are doing serious investigations and we shall communicate to you as soon as we unravel all the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

Misal also confirmed that the two bodies were recovered from the bush between Nahuta and Garin Abata villages of Ardo Kola local government area.

Gunmen had kidnapped Prof. Aliyu Mohammed of Department of Agriculture, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, and killed his son, Abdulaziz.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the don, who is also the Wazirin Wusasa, was abducted Sunday night at Wusasa, Zaria, Kaduna State.

Mr Usman Aliyu, son of the kidnapped professor, told newsmen in Zaria that the incident took place on Sunday at about 10.30 p.m.

He said besides kidnapping his father and killing one of his brothers, they also shot Malam Abubakar Kabir, who is a younger brother to the deceased (Abdulaziz Aliyu).

Aliyu said no sooner than he returned to the family house at 10.30 p.m on Sunday, he heard sudden gunshots and took cover by hiding somewhere in the compound.

According to him, when the gunshots stopped, he called out to one of his younger brothers who informed him that they (gunmen) had killed their brother and kidnapped their father.

He said the deceased had already been buried according to Islamic rites while the one shot was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Alhaji Ahmad Amfani, the Ward Head of Kuregu, Wusasa, said the community made effort to reach some security agencies, but their effort was not successful as none responded to the distress call.

The state police command is yet to react to the development.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Government had also confirmed the report through its Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan.

Aruwan said in a statement on Monday that intelligence information said the bandits kidnapped Mohammed and killed his son.

Unidentified gunmen killed two female judges from Afghanistan’s Supreme Court on Sunday morning, police said, adding to a wave of assassinations in Kabul and other cities while government and Taliban representatives have been holding peace talks in Qatar.

The two judges, who have not yet been named, were killed and their driver wounded, in an attack at around 8:30 am, police said, adding the case was being investigated by security forces.

A spokesman for the Taliban said its fighters were not involved.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani issued a statement condemning attacks on civilians by the Taliban and other militant groups.

Ghani said “terror, horror and crime” was not a solution to Afghanistan’s problem and beseeched the Taliban to accept “a permanent ceasefire”.

Government officials, journalists, and activists have been targeted in recent months, stoking fear particularly in the capital Kabul.

The Taliban has denied involvement in some of the attacks, but has said its fighters would continue to “eliminate” important government figures, though not journalists or civil society members.

Rising violence has complicated U.S.-brokered peace talks taking place in Doha as Washington withdraws troops.

Sources on both sides say negotiations are only likely to make substantive progress once U.S. President-elect Joe Biden takes office and makes his Afghan policy known.

The number of U.S troops in Afghanistan has been reduced to 2,500, the lowest level of American forces there since 2001, according to the Pentagon on Friday.

Stray bullet kills commercial motorcylist in Ibadan, suspected thief set ablaze

A commercial motorcyclist was on Wednesday night reportedly killed in Ibadan by a stray bullet allegedly from a gun shot by an operative of the recently created state Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps.

Operatives of the security outfit were on patrol around Mokola area of Ibadan at 11p.m. when a gun shot was heard allegedly hitting the motorcyclist, identified as Tosin Thomas.

A witness to the incident told NAN that Thomas, 21, was rushed to hospital for treatment, but later died in the early hours of Thursday.

The witness said that the deceased was not on his bike, but was walking in the area when he was hit by stray bullet.

NAN reports that there was a protest around Mokola roundabout area of Ibadan on Thursday morning by motorcycle operators.

The protesters who carried the corpse of the deceased around Mokola area, later dumped the corpse in the middle of the road.

This caused serious traffic gridlock around Mokola roundabout while shops owners hurriedly closed their shops for safety.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, CSP Olugbenga Fadeyi, confirmed the incident in an interview with NAN on Thursday in Ibadan.

Fadeyi said that a report was received on Thursday by 9:10am from one Alamu Timothy at the Mokola Police station that 21-year-old Tosin Thomas of Ode-Olo area, Ibadan, was hit by bullet fired by Amotekun operatives around Mokola Total filing station at about 11:30 pm.

Fadeyi said that the victim was rushed to University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for immediate medical attention, but was later confirmed dead.

The PPRO said that investigation had commenced into the matter and normalcy had been restored to the area.

In another development, a suspected thief was set ablaze by a mob around Leventis area of Ibadan on Thursday morning.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, CSP Olugbenga Fadeyi, confirmed this to NAN in a telephone interview on Thursday in Ibadan.

“There was a mob attack on a guy who was accused of stealing and later set ablaze before the arrival of the Police.

“Immediately I got the information, I called the DPO in charge of the area, but before the arrival of the police patrol team at the scene, the suspect had been set ablaze.

” I will get back to you on the update of what actually happened,” Fadeyi said.

Suspected kidnappers, who abducted a former chairman of the Ekiti State chapter of Independent Petroleum Marketers (IPMAN), Alhaji Suleiman Akinbami, at one of his fuel stations in Ado Ekiti, a few days ago, have allegedly demanded a N60m ransom for his release.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akinbami was kidnapped last Sunday, around 9:00pm, by four gunmen at one of his several filling stations located along the Ado Ekiti- Ijan Ekiti road, Ado Ekiti.

A source close to the family, who pleaded for anonymity, told newsmen in Ado Ekiti, on Wednesday, that the abductors had contacted his family on Tuesday night, and reportedly demanded N60m before they could release him.

” You know our man was kidnapped on Sunday night in a very dramatic way, and very late on Tuesday night we got a call from them asking us to pay N60m if we are to see him again. We pleaded with them to reduce the amount and we are yet to hear from them since then”, the source said.

When called for his reaction, the Ekiti Amotekun Corps Commander, Brig.-Gen Joe Komolafe (rtd), said he was not aware of the ransom demand by the abductors., but that his men were still in the bush trailing the abductors, with the hope that the victim would soon be rescued through the combined efforts of Amotekun, the police and vigilante.

” Let me tell you that our personnel our very much in the bush trailing the kidnappers in a bid to rescue the victim.. It is a joint collaboration with police and other security agents to rescue him unhurt.

” We are appealing to members of the public to volunteer useful and timely information, on the activities of criminal elements in their communities, because the criminals are human beings and not spirits. Our desk number is 09062970421.”, he said.

The Benue Police Command has said that unknown gunmen attacked and killed three Police officers at the residence of the Katsina-Ala Local Government Chairman, Mr Alfred Atera.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Catherine Anene, who disclosed this in Makurdi, on Thursday, said the incident took place in the early hours of today.

Anene confirmed that Atera was not hurt in the incident and investigation into the matter had already begun.

Gunmen abduct Edo head of service

Suspected gunmen invade Igangan community

Mr Anthony Okungbowa, Head of Service (HoS) in Edo, was on Saturday evening kidnapped by suspected gunmen along Oza Road, in Orhionmwon Local Government Area.

The gunmen reportedly killed his official driver, whose name could not be immediately confirmed, before abducting Okungbowa.

A senior civil servant, who craved anonymity, said the incident happened after Okungbowa attended a local event in Oza.

“He was kidnapped on his way back to Benin City after attending the event. His driver was killed in the process,” the source said.

Efforts to confirm the incident from the spokesman, Edo Police Command, Mr Chidi Nwabuzor, was not successful as he did not pick up calls.

The state Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, also did not pick up calls to his phone.

The Police have confirmed the murder of Dr Fatai Aborode, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, by unknown gunmen.

Aborode was allegedly killed in his farm along Apodun road, Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the state on Friday.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, confirmed the incident in a text message sent to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Ibadan.

NAN gathered that the PDP chieftain was the Chief Executive Officer of Kunfayakun Green Treasures Limited.

The PPRO confirmed that the deceased was robbed and shot by four unknown gunmen at about 5.50 p.m.

“At about 1750 hrs of 11/12/2020, along Apodun road Igangan, one Alh Fatal Aborode ‘m’ of Igangan, was robbed and shot by four unknown gunmen.

“The victim was rushed to Olugbon hospital, Igboora where he was confirmed dead.

“Effort is on to arrest the fleeing assailants,’’ the statement read in part.

The deceased, along with his manager, was attacked when they were returning home.

The manager escaped gunshots as he reportedly fled the scene when the gunmen attacked.

Aborode was the House of Reps candidate under the platform of Accord Party in 2015.

He, however, defected to PDP recently.

Unknown gunmen assassinated a female TV anchor and her driver in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar, officials said on Thursday.

The Journalist, Malalai Maiwand, and her driver were shot dead at 07:10 am local time (02:40 GMT) on their way to work in the provincial capital Jalalabad city, the provincial governor spokesman, Ataullah Khogyani said.

Maiwand worked as an anchor for the private “Enikass’’ Radio and TV channel in the volatile province for about four years, channel head Zalmai Latifi told dpa.

Latifi blamed enemies of the country and said the channel had been receiving death threats.

In 2017, several people including a driver of the TV station were killed in an explosion close to the station.

In 2018, the director of the station was abducted by unknown gunmen but was later freed.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the Thursday assassination; both the Taliban and Islamic State are active in the province.

According to Reporters without Borders, Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.

At least 10 journalists and media staff were killed in the country in 2019.

The previous year was the deadliest for journalists, with 20 reporters and media staff killed in various violent attacks in the embattled country.

In November, two prominent Afghan journalists were killed by bombs in separate incidents in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province and the capital Kabul.

The Police Command in Benua has confirmed the killing of Karl Kwaghger, an Associate Professor with the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (UMA), by unknown gunmen on Saturday night.

The late don lectured at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the university.

The command’s spokesperon, DSP Catherine Anene, told the News Agency of Nigeria NAN on Sunday in Makurdi that the lecturer’s body was found around 11p.m. within the Tarka Foundation premises, Makurdi.

The state-owned Tarka Foundation houses a hotel and many other sports facilities which draw many people almost round the clock.

Anene, however, said that the command had yet to make any arrest or unravel the reason behind the killing, but added that investigation was ongoing.
