Namibia implements urgent measures amid spike in COVID-19 cases

The Namibian Government on Friday took an urgent decision to step up preventive measures after a spike in both new COVID-19 cases and related fatality rate in the last three weeks.

New space will be created, more staff hired, and additional oxygen acquired to handle the rising number of COVID-19 patients that have overwhelmed hospitals, according to a government circular.

Minister of Information and Communication Technology and cabinet spokesperson, Peya Mushelenga, said the government had approved an urgent plan to provide more help to state hospitals fighting the pandemic.

Health Minister Kalumbi Shangula, said the country’s confirmed daily new cases reached a record 1,045 on Thursday night.

Total confirmed cases now stand at 61,374 and number of related deaths at 968, as the country faces what Shangula described as its worst challenge from COVID-19.

Ethiopia reports 1,878 new COVID-19 cases

Ethiopia registered 1,878 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 215,189 as of Sunday evening, the country’s Ministry of Health said.

The ministry said 27 new deaths from COVID-19 were reported across the country during the same period, bringing the national death toll to 2,963.

The East African country reported 742 more recoveries, taking the national count to 161,968.

According to the ministry, Ethiopia currently has some 50,256 active COVID-19 cases, of which 857 are said to be under severe health conditions.

Africa’s second-most populous nation, Ethiopia has so far reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the East Africa region, being the fourth most affected country in Africa in terms of positive cases.

The latest figures from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention showed that Ethiopia’s COVID-19 cases accounted for about five per cent of the African continent’s total confirmed cases.

The country has so far conducted 2,389,558 COVID-19 medical tests, including 6,962 tests in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.

Ethiopia started COVID-19 vaccine jabs last month after it received the first 2.2 million vaccines from COVAX.

Last week, Ethiopia received a batch of China’s Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines, donated by the Chinese government.

Ethiopia reports 469 new COVID-19 cases

Ethiopian Govt., WFP commend China’s humanitarian support

Ethiopia registered 469 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 133,767, said the country’s Ministry of Health on Sunday.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the country has reached 2,066 as of Sunday evening, after three new deaths were reported, the ministry said.

It said 686 more recoveries were logged during the past 24 hours, taking the national count to 119,416.

Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation, is one of the countries the hardest hit by COVID-19 in Africa, after South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt.

The Ethiopian government has been urging the public to implement COVID-19 precautionary measures to contain the spread of the virus.
