President-elect Asíwájú Tinubu extols ex-Supreme Court Justice Ogwuegbu’s virtues on turning 90

President-elect Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu on his attainment of 90 on March 16.

He described Justice Ogwuegbu as an excellent judge who distinguished himself both on the bench and in public service.

After spending only five years at the Appeal Court, Justice Ogwuegbu was elevated to the Supreme Court of Nigeria as justice in February 1992. Later in December 1999, he was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of The Gambia.

The President-elect said Justice Ogwuegbu was noted for dispensing justice without fear or favour, and particularly in the interest of the downtrodden for which he was nicknamed “Judge Goodheart.”

While commending Justice Ogwuegbu for his contributions to jurisprudence and the country in general, the President-elect wished him good health and increased wisdom.

In a statement issued by his office and signed by Mr. Tunde Rahman, the President-elect said:

“Congratulations to former Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu on turning 90 on March 16.

“Justice Ogwuegbu distinguished himself while on the bench particularly at the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court and in public service.

“His contributions to the legal profession where he earned the moniker ‘Judge Goodheart’ and to nation-building are particularly noteworthy.

“Earlier in his career which took him to the zenith, Justice Ogwuegbu was appointed among others as Coroner for Umuahia Judicial Division, East-Central State of Nigeria from 1973 to 1976. He also headed the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) as vice chairman, Umuahia branch, between 1975 and 1976.

“While thanking him for his useful contributions to jurisprudence and to Nigeria, I wish Justice Ogwuegbu continued good health, more wisdom and continued God’s protection.”

President-elect Asíwájú Tinubu sympathises with victims of Ikeja train accident

President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has expressed sympathy for victims of the train accident that occurred in Lagos on Thursday.

The accident occurred around 7 am in the Shogunle area of Ikeja, when a staff bus crossed the track of a moving train.

In a statement from the Office of the President-elect, signed by Tunde Rahman, Tinubu noted:

“I offer my sincere condolences to the victims and families affected by the gory incident involving a train and a bus in the Ikeja area of Lagos State earlier today.

“I am praying for all, including those who died and those who sustained injuries in the tragic and unfortunate incident.

“My thoughts are with them and with the Lagos State Government, even as I continue to follow the emergency response efforts closely and offer support, where necessary, to ensure that survivors and others involved receive the best care.”

President-elect Tinubu hails Dr. Masha on appointment as G-24 Director

President-elect Asíwájú Bola Tinubu has congratulated renowned economist and member of the Federal Government’s Economic Advisory Council, Dr. Iyabo Masha, as the Director of G-24 Secretariat.

The Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-four on International Monetary Affairs and Development (G24) recently announced the appointment of Dr. Masha as the Director of the G-24 following an extensive recruitment process. She will succeed Ms. Marilou Uy.

Asíwájú Tinubu, who noted Dr. Masha’s excellent knowledge of the economy, both national and international, as well as her rich ideas on broad range of issues and policies, described the appointment as appropriate and well deserved.

In a statement by his Media Office on Wednesday in Lagos, the President-elect said: “Congratulations to renowned economist Dr. Iyabo Masha on her appointment by the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-four on International Monetary Affairs and Development (G-24) as Director of its Secretariat.

“To say this appointment is an excellent appointment is stating the obvious. Dr. Masha’s knowledge, experience and immense skills have prepared her for high offices.

“She has has a deep understanding of the economy, both national and global, and parades excellent ideas on a broad range of issues and policies.

“All of that earned her an eminent place as a member of Nigeria’s Presidential Economic Advisory Council, directly advising the president on economic policy from 2019-2022.

“Having worked on a range of countries at the International Monetary Fund, Washington DC, developing non-program policies for emerging market and low-income economies in Africa and Asia, her experience, I understand, aligns with the purpose of G-24, which is to coordinate the position of developing countries on monetary and development issues, particularly issues on the agendas of the IMF.

“I congratulate this proudly Lagos Dr. Masha on her achievement. I know that more of this kind of appointment will come her way as Nigeria and the world will always require her talents and experience.”

A day after the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, some 49 Senior Advocates of Nigeria to defend his mandate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has put together a legal team of 19 Senior Advocates of Nigeria to challenge the outcome of the February 25 election.

Atiku revealed this on Wednesday at his campaign Headquarters in Abuja, saying they should “establish the claim of illegality in the election and reclaim the mandate of the Nigerian people.”

He further declared that it is crucial for them to go through this process not just for himself and PDP, but also to reinforce constitutional democracy and safeguard it for future generations.

The list of SANs includes Chief Chris Uche, Paul Usoro, Tayo Jegede, Ken Mozia, Chief Mike Ozekhome, Mahmood Magaji, Joe Abraham, Chukwuma Umeh, Garba Tetengi and Chief Emeka Etiaba – as well as Chief Goddy Uche, Professor Maxwell Gidado; PDP’s National Legal Adviser A.K. Ajibade; O.M. Atoyebi; Nella Rabana; Paul Ogbole; Nuremi Jimoh and Abdul Ibrahim.

I prayed for Tinubu’s victory, I didn’t hide it – Umahi

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has said that he prayed for Sen. Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win the presidential election of February 25.

Umahi said this on Tuesday in Abakaliki, while addressing stakeholders and people of Izzi clan ahead of the March 11 Governorship and House of Assembly polls.

He said that he did not hide his supplications to God that Tinubu and all the APC candidates should win at the polls.

“I prayed to God to bring Tinubu on board, give me a voice to stand with the people and bring unity to Nigeria.

“I promised God that I will fight a battle to re-unite this country and bring peace and prosperity to it.

“This is my pledge to God and I will do it because it is time for the leaders of this country to make sacrifices.

“The situation is bad, the country’s resources can develop it, with Ebonyi being an example,” the governor said.

He urged the Igbo people to support the government in power in their various states of abode for them to have peace.

“Ndigbo should support APC governors in particular, support Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Lagos and Nyesom Wike in Rivers, among others.

“It is where a man lives that he prospers as you can’t be staying in a place and plot against its people,” he said.

Umahi urged the Izzi people to be united to win the gubernatorial poll because it was their turn according to the existing charter of equity in the state.

“I cannot support anybody from the Southern Senatoeual District as myself to succed me.

“Anybody from Izzi supporting someone from the south to become governor is not normal but you should not fight such a person.

“Such a person has already destroyed him or herself because this is pay back time for you for supporting the south in 2015,” Umahi said.

The Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Mr Ebere Nwogba, thanked the governor for convening the meeting, saying that they appreciated his good intentions towards them.

Prominent persons from the area took turn to thank the governor for fulfilling his promise to support one of their own to succeed him.

Buhari urges Nigerians in Diaspora to support Tinubu’s government

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians living in Doha, Qatar, to support President-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu, as he takes over the reins of government on May 29.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s media aide in a statement on Wednesday said the president made the call at a Town Hall meeting as part of his visit to the State of Qatar, on Tuesday.

Buhari said his administration set forward to emplace credible, transparent and fair elections which will conclude on March 11, with the Governorship and State Assembly elections.

He therefore called on them to “support the incoming government of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, so that Nigeria will continue to be the beacon of hope and prosperity in our continent and an example for other African countries to emulate.”

Speaking further, the president acknowledged the noble roles that Nigerians in Diaspora all over the world had been playing in the development of Nigeria.

He added that his administration had approved a National Diaspora Policy, and supported the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) all the way to develop programmes for the engagement of Nigerians in the Diaspora for the ‘ambassadors’ to contribute their quota towards the development of their fatherland.

In his remarks, the Nigerian Ambassador to the State of Qatar, Yakubu Ahmed congratulated Buhari for conducting successful Presidential and National Assembly elections on Feb. 25, 2023.

According to him, the process has proven that Nigeria’s democracy is indeed strong while praying for an equally successful Governorship and State Assembly elections.

Ahmed informed the president that Nigeria and the State of Qatar had maintained brotherly bilateral relationship since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 2013.

According to the ambassador, there are currently about 7,000 Nigerians residing in Qatar, and gainfully engaged in diverse areas of human endeavours.

“I’m proud to inform you, Your Excellency that majority of our nationals in Doha are professionals who have excelled in their chosen careers, playing critical roles in healthcare, safety, oil and gas, aviation, construction, among other sectors,” he added

Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian community in the country, Dr Arabo Ibrahim, a Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, said he had every reason to thank the President especially for restoring peace in the North-eastern part of Nigeria.

“Our people were chased out of Mubi in Adamawa State by Boko Haran terrorists, peace is back.

”Now we go there and sleep peacefully. There is a lot of food now. People from the neighboring countries even come to buy food in Nigeria,” he added.

Another member of the community, Prof. Akintunde Akinade, also thanked President Buhari for conducting an electoral process “alluded to as one of the best. We have gone through elections many times before and we all know what it’s all about.

”This is an election where money has taken a back seat. We’re very grateful to see what has happened this time in the presidential election.

”Thank you for bringing sanity to the country and the electoral process. We wish that this would continue.”

He equally lauded the president for the infrastructural revolution in the country, his anti-corruption war, keeping Nigeria together as well as his well-known democratic crusade in Africa.

“I really want to thank you for your unwavering critique of African Presidents that really want to stay in office forever. I wish you a well-deserved rest,” he added.

The event was put together by the Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri Erewa.

President-elect Tinubu condemns bandits’ attack in Zamfara, Kano; mourns victims

…condoles Sheikh Gumi, Abacha family over losses

The President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned attacks at the weekend in Maru Local Government of Zamfara State and Maigari town of Rimin Gado Local Government in Kano State by bandits and unknown assailants.

A Divisional Police Officer (DPO), a police inspector and a vigilante were reported killed in the bandits’ attack in Zamfara. In the Kano attack, unknown gunmen broke into the residence of a village head and shot him dead.

In a statement by his media office on Monday, Tinubu said the attack on Maru town after a period of relative peace in Zamfara State was a reminder that more needs to be done to completely defeat bandits and terrorists.

“As a country we have to come together to defeat these merchants of death and terror once and for all. Mindless killings and atrocities like this should have no place in our country,” he said.

The president-elect condoled with the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, the Zamfara State Government and families of the affected security personnel over the deaths.

Tinubu also called for investigation into the murder of the district head of Maigari in Kano State, who was the father of Rimin Gado Local Government chairman, Munir Dahiru Maigari.

He commiserated with the local government chairman, Kano State Government and family of the deceased over the gruesome murder of the community leader.

In separate condolence messages, the president-elect consoled prominent cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi who lost his aged mother and the family of Late General Sani Abacha over the death of their son, Abdullahi.

“It is touching to part with a loved one, no matter the circumstances and age. We cannot question the will of Allah but we can only pray that Almighty Allah grant them eternal rest and give us the fortitude to bear their demise, he said.

The president-elect condoled with all the families who lost their relatives and prayed for God’s mercies on the departed souls.

President-elect Tinubu congratulates Michael Olusegun, new Methodist Archbishop of Abuja

The President-elect, Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has congratulated the new Archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Michael Olusegun.

He said his divine elevation has reflected the sacred and important values of the church, according to a statement from the office of the President-elect, signed by Mr Tunde Rahman.

In a congratulatory letter to the new Archbishop personally signed by him, the President-elect wrote: “I congratulate His Grace, the Most Revd Michael Olusegun over his assumption of office as the new Archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese of the Methodist Church Nigeria.

“His Grace’s leadership over the years, which culminated in his latest elevation, has reflected the sacred and important values of the church, including faith, community, and brotherliness.

“I wish him well in the new position and pray that he continues to enjoy the support and protection of the Almighty as he grows the church and adds to the cause of peace and unity.”

Both Tinubu and I lost our home states in the presidential election – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, in the course of the week, hosted the winner of the 2023 presidential election, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu, warning that votes and those that cast them should not be taken for granted.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu had on Wednesday morning declared Tinubu as winner of Feb. 25 presidential election with 8,794,726 votes.

Tinubu defeated his closest rival Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 6,984,520 votes, and Peter Obi of Labour Party, who secured 6,101,533 votes of the 24,965,218 total votes cast.

Also, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso- of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) came distance fourth with 1,496,687 votes.

Reacting to the results announced by the INEC Chairman, Buhari at his country home, Daura, Katsina State, said:

“I congratulate His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory. Elected by the people, he is the best person for the job. I shall now work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power.

“The election was Africa’s largest democratic exercise. In a region that has undergone backsliding and military coups in recent years, this election demonstrates democracy’s continued relevance and capability to deliver for the people it serves.

“Within Nigeria, the results reveal democracy’s ripening in our country. Never has the electoral map shifted so drastically in one cycle.

“In the presidential elections, states in all regions across the nation changed colour.

”Some amongst you may have noticed my home state amongst them. The winning candidate did not carry his own home state either. That happene during a competitive election.

”Votes and those that cast them cannot be taken for granted. Each must be earned. Competition is good for our democracy.

”There is no doubt the people’s decision has been rendered in the results we look at today.”

NAN reports that Tinubu was accompanied by Vice-President-elect, Kashim Shettima and the National Chairman of APC, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu.

Others on the trip to Daura were: Governors of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai; Kebbi, Atiku Bagudu; Ebonyi, Dave Umahi; Zamfara, Bello Matawalle; Niger, Abubakar Sani-Bello; Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Ogun, Dapo Abiodun, Jigawa, Badaru Abubakar and Plateau, Simon Lalong.

The President-elect used the opportunity to thank Buhari for his support during the electioneering process.

Buhari also received political and community leaders at his country home, Daura, on a congratulatory visit over the emergence of Tinubu as the country’s next President.

While receiving Gov. Aminu Masari and the Emir of Daura, Dr Umar Faruk-Umar, who led members of their cabinets on separate visits, Buhari reiterated what he had often said about the President-elect that:

“Bola Tinubu truly believes in Nigeria and is genuinely committed to the progress and sustainable future of Nigeria.”

He thanked the electorate for their massive support for the APC in the Presidential and the National Assembly elections, asking them to further mobilise for the upcoming Gubernatorial and Houses of Assembly elections.

The president was also in Maiduguri, Borno, on Thursday where he inaugurated projects including Maiduguri Emergency Power Project and inspected the ruins of Maiduguri Monday market, destroyed by fire recently.

On the inaugurated Maiduguri Emergency Power Project, Buhari described the feat as another testament towards achieving uninterrupted power supply aimed at improving the economy and lives of Nigerians.

The gas plant was constructed by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) to supply 50 megawatts of electricity to Maiduguri and environs.

The president was accompanied by Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno, Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council and some eminent citizens of the state.

On Friday, Buhari also in Daura, Katsina State, virtually inaugurated 700 Ashok Leyland Troop Carrying Vehicles assembled in Lagos.

At the event, the president commended the patriotic role played by the Armed Forces in maintaining law and order at the just -concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to him, the sacrifices of the Armed Forces remain appreciated by Nigerians.

Buhari pledged more support for the welfare of the military, while assuring that their “labour will not be in vain’.

Buhari, who departed the Umar Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina, on Saturday for Doha, Qatar, for the 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LCDs), is expected back in the country on Wednesday.

President-elect Asíwájú Bola TInubu has congratulated renowned journalist, administrator and politician, Alhaji Liadi Tella, on his attainment of 75.

Asíwájú Tinubu commended Alhaji Tella not only for his immense contributions to the journalism profession but also for his useful role in the propagation of Islam and religious harmony in the country.

In a statement by the Office of the President-elect signed by Tunde Rahman, Asíwájú Tinubu described Tella as an excellent man and good advocate of Islam.

The President-elect said: “I congratulate and rejoice with astute journalist and administrator, Alhaji Liadi Tella, on turning 75 on March 3.

“I first encountered Alhaji Tella within the media space before our paths crossed during the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria during which he made valuable contributions.

“Tella is a fine journalist and important media leader. After a long stint at the National Concord, leaving the stage as General Manager, he rose to the pinnacle of the profession as Managing Director of Monitor Newspaper.

“His deep involvement in the propagation of Islam and promotion of religious harmony in the country is also worthy of note.

“I commend Alhaji Tella for all he has done for nation-building through the media profession and for being a role model for the younger generation.

“At 75, my prayer for the Asíwájú Musulumi of Iwoland is that Almighty Allah grant him many more years, the grace and wisdom to continue to impact the lives of many more in our country.”
