The Police in north-western Pakistan on Monday arrested a man accused of murdering a six-year-old girl.
The incident took place in Nowshera District of Khyber Pakhtukhwa Province, where the girl had gone missing on Saturday, police said.
Hours later, her body was found wrapped in a bag in a deserted location not far from her home, according to local media reports.
“We have arrested the man for alleged murder of the minor,” Adnan Durrani, a spokesperson for Nowshera Police said.
Durrani said the man, who was the girl’s neighbour had confessed to the murder.
Local media reported that she was also raped, but Durrani said it was not possible to confirm this as the post-mortem report had not yet been released.
In 2018, a similar case involving the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl named Zainab triggered nationwide protests and a global outcry.
According to the child rights organisation Sahil, at least three cases of severe sexual violence, including rape and attempted rape, are reported by national newspapers in Pakistan daily.
