A 42-year-old driver, Rotimi Adeniran, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for his failure to produce a suspect in a motor accident case.
Adeniran, whose residential address was not provided, was docked on a charge of perversion of justice.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. Mathew Akhaloude, the defendant allegedly perverted the cause of justice by failing to produce one Friday Omale, a suspect in a case of a fatal motor accident, under investigation by the Alakuko Police Station.
Akhaloude told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct.17, 2018 at 10.00 a.m., at the Alakuko Police Station in Lagos.
He said the defendant stood in as a surety for the Omale who hit a 50-year-old man with his commercial bus.
Akhaloude also said that the man, whom the suspect hit later died at an undisclosed hospital while receiving treatment.
“The defendant failed to produce the suspect, after he had stood in as a surety for him.
“This led to his immediate arrest,” he said.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 97 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that perversion of justice attracts two years’ imprisonment for offenders.
The chief magistrate, Mrs A.A. Adetunji, granted the defendant N200, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Adetunji said the sureties must be blood relatives of the defendant and live within the court’s jurisdiction.
Adetunji adjourned the case until April 17 for hearing. (NAN)
