A 41-year-old man, Uhunamure Osahon, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ogbeson Chief Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo, for allegedly obtaining N1.8 million under false pretence.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is being tried on a count charge of obtaining money under false pretence.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Charity Asemota, told the court that Osahon committed the offence on May 25, at Aduwawa Area, Benin City, Edo.
Asemota said that the defendant obtained N1.8 million from the complainant, Mrs Ayuduble Izekor, on the pretext of selling a parcel of land to her, knowing same to be false.
He said that the defendant refused to sell the land to the complainant and did not refund the money.
According to him, the offence contravenes Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 48, Vol. 11, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable in Edo.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
The Chief Magistrate, Mutairu Oare, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.
Oare said that one of the sureties must be a public servant and must be verified by the court registrar.
He, thereafter, adjourned the case till July 6, for further hearing.
