More prominent Nigerians have risen for the memory of a student of the University of Benin, Uwa Omozuwa, who was raped and murdered in Benin las week.
She was assaulted and raped inside a church and the killing has sparked widespread anger and call for justice,
While stars such as Genevieve Nnaji, Funke Akindele and Doyin Abrahams have condemned the act, President Muhammadu Buhari and All Progressives Congress Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, have also stood to be counted among those in her defense.
On Tuesday, Buhari expressed condolences and assured that justice would b done.
He tweeted, ”I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Uwaila Omozuwa. I expect the Nigeria Police Force to speedily and diligently investigate this case and ensure that all the culprits responsible for this barbaric act are brought to justice.”
On his part, Tinubu carried a placard as many other people have done.
He, however, also made a case for two other ladies who recently suffered similar fate – Jennifer and Tina Ezenwa.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, has ordered the immediate transfer of the Uwa case from the Edo State police command to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Adamu noted in a statement signed by Police PRO, Frank Mba:
“The Inspector General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the ongoing investigations into the inhuman sexual assault and death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omosuwa which occurred recently in Benin, Edo State from the Police State Headquarters, Benin to the Force headquarters, Abuja.
“The IGP’s directive is sequel to the preliminary report from the team of investigators and forensic experts earlier deployed to assist the Edo State Police Command in the investigations into the unfortunate incident. The DIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), DIG Anthony Ogbizi Michael, fdc will henceforth provide direct supervision and ensure speedy and thorough investigation of the case.”
