A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr Oluseyi Adisa, has called for construction of trailer parks in strategic areas of Oyo State.
Adisa, representing Afijio constituency, made the call at the House plenary on Tuesday.
He said that the construction would reduce indiscriminate parking of trailers, tankers and other articulated vehicles on the highways.
“The Ibadan/Oyo express is an important route that provides intra-town, inter-town and interstate services for motorists, Ibadan being a focal point of regional and commercial activities in South-Western Nigeria.
“The city is well connected with functional and efficient road transport system that connects even the Nothern parts of the country.
“Hence, the need for efficient and effective free flow of freight for the city to function appropriately. The menace of incessant gridlock and accidents is worrisome and unbecoming,” he said.
Adisa said that there was urgent need for the construction of standard trailer parks by the government, with public-private partnerships.
He said the arrangement should allow individual or corporate organisations to build and manage trailer parks on a specified contractual agreement with the government.
“Such parks will contain amenities such as shops, restaurants, washrooms, mechanic workshops, hostels and the likes, which will assist users and generate revenue for the government.
“Ogun is procuring solutions to haphazard parking of articulated vehicles and traffic congestion. By doing this they are also generating revenue for the state.,” he said.
Adisa said that Ilora in Afijio State Constituency was one good place to construct a trailer park.
“This place is a good place for the construction because already trailers are being parked there.
“I want the house to see this as an issue that requires urgent attention. When these parks are constructed, it will ease citizens’ life and also protect their safety,” he said.
