Enugu North Senator, Utazi Chukwuka, has made clarification on a statement he made that ‘Africans marry for children not one’.
The statement has generated a lot of controversy online, with many saying the senator is wrong.
But speaking on ‘My View’ on ‘TVC’ on Thursday, he said he was quoted out of context.
According to him, he made the statement while having the Senate was discussing a bill on the issue of genotype, which led to the question of sickle cell and Africans’ instinct to want to have children from marriages.
On a point raised by Yeni Kuti, who was on the ‘MY View’ panel, that when two people with AS genotype marry, they can examine the status of the child during pregnancy and abort if it is a carrier, Chukwuka ruled it out, saying his Catholic Christian faith rejected that.
“I am a Catholic. I don’t believe in abortion,” he declared.
