No fewer than 21 corps members in Enugu would either be remobilised or have their service year extended for various offences committed during the service year.
The state Coordinator of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Sam Ujogu, disclosed this on Thursday in Enugu during the passing out ceremony of the 2019 Batch ‘A’ corps members.
According to him, 12 of the affected corps members absconded from service while nine played truancy, thereby, contravening the Bye-laws of the scheme.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Ujogu added that while those that absconded would be remobilised for a fresh service, the remaing nine others would have their service extended.
He however regretted that three other corps members out of the 2, 243 in the batch lost their lives during the service year.
The state coordinator added that one of the deceased corps members, Queen Okereke died of kidney failure, the other, Veronica Ogomegbunamu died during child birth, while Peace Omini died in an auto crash.
“Perhaps, the most painful is that of Omini who died on Feb. 28, 2020 through road accident,” he said.
Ujogu noted that three corps members would receive the Enugu State Government NYSC Honours Award for excellence while one corps member would receive the NYSC Chairman’s Award.
The state coordinator lauded the state government for the goodwill and assistance the scheme was enjoying in the state.
“As human wants are limitless, we plead that you should not be tired of our ceaseless requests.
“Finally, to my outgoing corps members, I congratulate you for acquitting yourselves creditably during the service year.
“We appreciate your commitments to the realisation of the goals of the NYSC scheme. As you move ahead to assume greater responsibilities, do not forget the positive experiences you acquired during your service year,” Ujogu said.
Earlier, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi said that the contributions of the corps members to the development process of the state was appreciated.
Ugwuanyi who was represented by his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Chief Uwakwe Azikiwe, commended the contributions of the corps members in the areas of education, healthcare delivery and campaign against corruption.
The governor said that the awards were a testimony that the state government was not oblivious of their hard work and sacrifices in the service of their fatherland.
“You are stepping into another phase of life where you may discover that some of your conceived ideas and dreams are not in tandem with present economic realities, especially, with regards to job opportunities.
“It is now time to use the lessons garnered from this exposure to make the right decisions for your future,” Ugwuanyi said.
