Troops from the East African Community (EAC) member countries will hold a joint military training exercise in eastern Uganda for two weeks with effect from Monday.
Brig. Richard Karemire, Uganda’s military spokesperson, said this in a statement issued on Thursday in Kampala.
Karemire said that more than 360 personnel from the military, police, prisons, immigrations and key civilian stakeholders from the six partner states would participate in the joint military training exercise at Jinja from Nov. 4 to Nov. 17.
The partner states include Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, Kenya and South Sudan.
The 12th edition of EAC joint Command Post Exercise (CPX), code named Ushirikiano Imara 2019, aims to promote the regional integration agenda.
Others are interoperability of the region’s armed forces and to improve their readiness in responding to complex security challenges in the region.
“The EAC CPX 2019 will cover peace support operations, counter terrorism, counter piracy, and disaster management,” said Karemire.
The CPX is conducted under the framework of the EAC protocol on co-operation in defence affairs, one of the interventions aimed at promoting the regional integration agenda.
Under the protocol, the partner states agreed to cooperate in all defence affairs and collaborate with international and regional organisations to promote peace, security and stability in the community.
