Like the deep calling to the deep, star actress Bimbo Akintola, has reflected on the journey of her celebrated colleague and filmmaker, Funke Akintola, to stardom.

She said Akindele was a product of self determination and doggedness, saying no one gave her the space to shine.

As ‘THE NATION’ reports,  Akintola spoke at a Masterclass session hosted by Femi Adebayo at his new media hub, Euphoria 360 in Lagos.

She said Akindele had been in the industry for years, starting in the English film industry, but struggled to get recognition.

According to her, despite being on sets for years, nobody gave Akindele the chance to shine, but she remained persistent and never gave up

She noted that Akindele later moved to the Yoruba film industry, where she started acting and producing, before releasing Jenifa, the film that made her a household name.

“She has been in the industry for a long time. She didn’t make it overnight. I remember seeing her on set; she was there for years, struggling. Nobody gave her the chance to shine. One thing she had was persistence; she never gave up. She moved to the Yoruba industry, started acting and producing, and before you know it, she did Jenifa, and the whole world knows who she is,” Akintola said.

The veteran actress added that many aspiring actors want to be like Akindele without knowing her backstory.

“So many of you now want to be like Funke Akindele; you don’t know her backstory, you don’t know her struggles. You figure it is overnight; no, it isn’t overnight,” she said.
