Ethiopia is positioning itself to become a major hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing across Africa through several strategic initiatives aimed at boosting local production of essential medicines, vaccines, and medical equipment.
Speaking on Friday, Ethiopia’s State Minister for Health, Muluken Argaw, outlined plans to leverage opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), develop regional supply chains, strengthen regulatory cooperation, and introduce joint procurement mechanisms.
He emphasized that expanding local production is essential for guaranteeing long-term health security across the continent. He noted that the country aims to look beyond its borders to broaden access and distribution for African-made health products, while simultaneously building up its medical tourism sector.
Market forecasts indicate that Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical sector is set to exceed $4 billion by 2030.
