The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it is using corps members to educate Nigerians about their rights to efficient and timely public service delivery.
The NYSC State Coordinator in Plateau, Mr Jonathan Yavala, said this on Monday in Jos while opening the 2026 SERVICOM/NYSC Customer Service Week.
Yavala said the scheme was leveraging its Community Development Service (CDS) groups to promote accountability, transparency and effective service delivery in communities across the country.
He said the initiative aimed to bridge the knowledge gap among Nigerians, many of whom were unaware of their rights to timely and efficient services in public institutions.
According to him, corps members were also sensitised during orientation camp on their rights to public services, their responsibilities and the need to comply with the scheme’s bye-laws.
Yavala explained that SERVICOM was introduced by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2004 to promote accountability, transparency and quality service delivery in public institutions.
He said SERVICOM operations covered NYSC orientation camps, the National Directorate Headquarters, area offices, state secretariats, zonal offices and local government offices.
He added that service delivery within the scheme had improved considerably since SERVICOM was formally adopted in 2004, although there was still room for improvement.
The coordinator urged staff at state and local government levels to remain committed to SERVICOM’s objectives, particularly the fight against corruption, waste and inefficiency in the public sector.
He also commended corps members, especially members of the SERVICOM CDS group, for helping to educate Nigerians about their rights to efficient and effective public services.
The 2026 SERVICOM Week/NYSC Customer Service Week is being celebrated under the theme, “Going the Extra Mile”.
