A 23-year-old man, Michael Gbadero, on Monday appeared before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Ogun State, for allegedly stealing iron rods worth N460,000.
The defendant, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and malicious damage to property. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp. Opeyemi Lawal, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on October 14, at about 2 p.m., at Banana Estate in Kemta Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
Lawal alleged that the defendant unlawfully entered the premises of the complainant, Mr Tunde Kehinde, and stole iron rods used to fence his house.
He further alleged that the defendant damaged the concrete poles while removing the iron rods.
According to the prosecutor, neighbours caught the defendant and alerted the complainant, who subsequently reported the incident to the police.
The offences contravene Sections 390(9) and 451 of the Criminal Law of Ogun State, 2006.
The Magistrate, Ms O. T. Odubanjo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N250,000, with one surety in like sum.
She ruled that the surety must be a registered bondsman with the Ogun State Judiciary.
The court also ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
The case was adjourned until November 3 for hearing.
