At least two people have died after severe flooding submerged more than 18 communities in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, destroying homes and farmlands and displacing residents.
The Nasarawa State Government confirmed the deaths and destruction on Monday, October 19, 2026, following flooding in the Eke Development Area.
The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Nawani Aboki, described the incident as a serious humanitarian concern, saying several buildings and farmlands had been destroyed.
According to reports, the flooding followed heavy rainfall and the overflow of the River Benue, leaving residents in affected communities struggling to find safe places to stay.
Many displaced residents reportedly moved to higher-ground communities, including Agyema, Agbachi and Rukubi, within Doma Local Government Area.
The displacement has placed additional pressure on host communities, while the destruction of farmlands threatens the livelihoods of residents who depend on agriculture for income and food.
Aboki said Governor Abdullahi Sule had directed the Director-General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency to visit the affected areas and assess the damage.
The government also began arrangements to provide relief materials and essential supplies to affected residents.
The commissioner urged people living in flood-prone areas to move to safer locations and warned displaced residents against returning home before conditions were safe, particularly amid concerns about a possible release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
The incident highlights the need for timely flood warnings, emergency assistance and improved preparedness to protect lives and property in vulnerable communities.
