Two people sustained severe burn injuries after a diesel-laden tanker fell from Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and burst into flames on Monday, October 19, 2026.
The incident occurred beneath the bridge, inward Berger, triggering a fire that required an emergency response from several agencies.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that two victims were rescued from the scene after sustaining extensive burns.
According to LASTMA, emergency responders worked together to remove the victims from the danger zone and arrange immediate medical attention.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency subsequently evacuated the injured persons to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at Toll Gate for treatment.
Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service also responded to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to surrounding infrastructure.
Other agencies involved in the response included the Federal Road Safety Corps, the police and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency.
The incident caused traffic congestion around the affected section of the expressway, forcing some motorists to use alternative routes while emergency operations continued.
The exact cause of the crash was not conclusively established in the reports reviewed.
The accident has again drawn attention to the risks associated with tanker crashes on busy roads, particularly when vehicles carrying flammable products are involved. Such incidents can endanger road users, nearby residents and emergency personnel.
