The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has urged Nigerians to promote national unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence following his visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, disclosed this in a statement on Monday during Shaibu’s official working visit to Rwanda.

Anele said the visit highlighted the devastating consequences of ethnic hatred, religious intolerance, divisive rhetoric and violent extremism.

She said the memorial houses the remains of about 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, adding that the tragedy offered lessons for Nigeria on the need to rise above ethnic, religious and political differences and reject hate speech.

According to her, the visit also underscored the importance of responsible leadership, early conflict prevention and sustained civil-military cooperation.

She added that national unity remained essential to lasting peace, security and development.
