The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has deployed more than 25 compactor trucks and sanitation personnel to remove accumulated waste from streets across Oshodi-Isolo Local Council in Lagos State.
The week-long intervention aims to clear waste backlogs, improve environmental sanitation and strengthen waste collection arrangements in affected communities.
The exercise, coordinated by LAWMA management staff, is being supported by the Supervisor for Health in Oshodi-Isolo Local Council.
Alongside the waste evacuation exercise, officials are conducting public awareness activities to encourage residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and help keep their communities clean.
LAWMA has urged residents to cooperate with their registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators by properly packaging refuse and adhering to agreed collection schedules.
The authority noted that removing accumulated waste alone would not guarantee lasting improvements without regular collection, proper disposal and effective monitoring to prevent further waste build-up.
It also called for stronger community participation and collaboration with local government authorities to sustain the benefits of the exercise.
The intervention comes as waste management remains an important public health and environmental concern in densely populated urban communities, where accumulated refuse can affect sanitation and residents’ living conditions.
LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to continued waste evacuation, public sensitisation and improved service delivery as part of efforts to maintain a cleaner Lagos.
The authority’s appeal underscores the importance of cooperation among waste management agencies, local authorities and residents in preventing refuse from accumulating again after evacuation exercises.
