Kano State has expanded its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure with the commissioning of two new refuelling and conversion facilities by private company NU Synergy.
The facilities bring the number of CNG refuelling stations in the state to 12, up from zero about a year ago, following the activation of the Northern Corridor.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), Ismaeel Ahmed, said the development demonstrated the potential of private-sector investment in Nigeria’s clean mobility sector.
Ahmed said Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources could provide cheaper transportation alternatives to petrol and diesel, reduce transport costs and create opportunities for investment, employment and skills development.
He recalled that NU Synergy approached the initiative a few months earlier to explore investment opportunities in the CNG sector, adding that the company received technical guidance and support before developing the facilities.
The two stations are located along Zaria Road and in Mariri, along Wudil Road, with plans to expand to other locations.
Ahmed commended the company for completing the projects within four months, describing the investment as an example of the private-sector participation needed to increase CNG adoption nationwide.
Motorists were offered free CNG refuelling on the day of the commissioning. Government officials, traditional leaders and private-sector stakeholders attended the event.
