Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disclose the companies responsible for printing sensitive materials for the 2027 general elections.
Atiku’s demand centres on transparency in the procurement and handling of election materials, an issue that is likely to attract increasing attention as preparations for the next general elections continue.
He has also raised questions about reported personnel changes within INEC departments involved in election operations.
According to reports, Atiku and members of the African Democratic Congress have called for greater disclosure of information concerning contractors and staffing arrangements linked to electoral preparations.
The demand highlights the importance of public confidence in the institutions responsible for organising elections.
Election materials, including ballot papers and other sensitive documents, require appropriate production, security and distribution procedures.
Knowing which companies have been contracted to handle such materials can help the public understand how procurement decisions are made and what safeguards are in place.
However, the questions raised by Atiku should be distinguished from established findings of wrongdoing.
A demand for disclosure does not, by itself, demonstrate that INEC’s procurement process is improper.
INEC’s response would help clarify the arrangements in place, including any information that can be publicly disclosed under applicable rules and security requirements.
As preparations for the 2027 elections progress, transparent communication between the electoral commission, political parties and the public will remain important.
Providing clear explanations about procurement and electoral safeguards could help address concerns before they grow into wider disputes.
The issue ultimately centres on accountability and the need for Nigerians to have confidence in the processes through which their elections are organised.
