Oba Michael Babatunde-Ayeyowa, the Lumure of Ayeka Kingdom in Okitipupa, Ondo State, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, who was accidentally shot and killed during the funeral rites of another chief.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday during the traditional funeral ceremony for the late Chief Omosuyi Obolo, the Odunwo of Ayeka. According to eyewitnesses, a fellow chief—whose identity is currently withheld—attempted to fire a celebratory gunshot into the air. However, the gun accidentally discharged, hitting Chief Akinola in the head and killing him instantly. The ceremony, attended by family members, community leaders, and local residents, was abruptly thrown into panic and halted following the shooting.
Speaking with NAN on Thursday in Okitipupa, Oba Babatunde-Ayeyowa described the event as a shocking and tragic “bad omen.”
“Although a king does not mourn, I have not been feeling well since the incident,” the monarch said. “My chiefs and residents are deeply unsettled because of this unfortunate tragedy. Such an incident calls for a traditional investigation, and we will perform all necessary rites to avert a recurrence. I pray never to witness such a tragedy again throughout my reign.”
Despite the grief, the traditional ruler urged his chiefs and residents to remain calm, go about their normal business, and trust that peace and stability would be maintained in the kingdom.
Other community leaders also expressed their grief and called for caution. Chief Andrew Olibamo, the Aribo of Ayeka, described the tragedy as a heavy blow to the entire kingdom, reaffirming that necessary traditional steps would be taken to prevent future occurrences. Similarly, High Chief Kolawole Adeule, the Kanye of Ayeka, noted that while traditional funeral rites are an established part of their culture and will continue, the community must exercise greater caution going forward. He also insisted that the chief responsible for the accidental discharge be thoroughly investigated.
Meanwhile, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, Public Relations Officer for the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed via telephone that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting. He added that an investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, and further updates will be made public once concluded.
