President Samia Hassan of Tanzania has called for stronger parliamentary accountability and greater international cooperation to address global challenges.
Hassan made the call while addressing the opening of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha via video link.
She said parliaments derive their authority from the people and have a responsibility to legislate in the public interest, scrutinise the use of public resources and hold governments accountable.
The president said Tanzania’s Constitution assigns Parliament oversight and advisory functions on behalf of the people, adding that effective oversight strengthens government performance and accountability to citizens.
Hassan said the assembly’s theme, “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all”, was particularly relevant amid geopolitical uncertainties, conflicts and socioeconomic challenges affecting efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
She noted that challenges such as conflicts, climate change and economic uncertainty transcend national borders and require cooperation among governments and parliaments worldwide.
