The Imo chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to formally join the party if he genuinely wants to support President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election.
The state APC chairman, Austin Onyedebelu, said Wike could not belong to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC at the same time.
His comments come amid disagreements between APC governors, led by Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, and Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, which he says is focused on supporting Tinubu’s re-election.
Onyedebelu described Wike as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and accused him of using the coalition to revive the PDP and pursue an alleged presidential ambition.
“There is no provision in the Electoral Act that says one can be two political parties at the same time.
“If you want to work for Mr President, you join his train. You cannot be at the end of two roads and say you are heading east,” he said.
However, former Imo Deputy Governor and PDP chieftain Eze Madumere defended Wike, describing him as an exceptional politician whose support for Tinubu reflected the freedom allowed by democracy.
Madumere said Wike had consistently supported Tinubu since the 2023 election and was now using the Rainbow Coalition to mobilise support for the President while remaining in the PDP.
He advised political stakeholders to focus on presenting their programmes and convincing voters ahead of the 2027 elections.
