A 48-year-old man, Akiah Edward, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N6 million by false pretence.
Edward, who pleaded not guilty, is facing two counts of obtaining by false pretence and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The prosecutor, Insp Evelyn Motim, told the court that Edward allegedly collected N6 million from Mr Nasir Abiola after promising to procure a Canadian visa for him.
Motim said the defendant initially collected N500,000 as a commitment for the travelling course, followed by N4.7 million and another N800,000.
She said Edward later asked Abiola to pay an additional N3 million to complete the visa application but allegedly failed to provide updates, instead giving excuses.
The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun, 2006.
Magistrate O. O. Sam-Obaleye granted Edward bail in the sum of N9 million with two sureties in like sum, who must be registered bondsmen with the Ogun State Judiciary.
She ordered that Edward be remanded at Ibara Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail conditions and adjourned the case until October 14 for hearing.
