Myanmar marked the 2026 World Ozone Day with a ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw, highlighting the importance of protecting the ozone layer and addressing climate change.

Speaking at the event, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, U Hsan Oo, said protecting the ozone layer was crucial to reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change.

He said adopting environmentally friendly refrigerants and technologies that prevent ozone depletion would help protect the atmosphere.

Hsan also stressed the need to protect ecosystems, agriculture and food security from the harmful effects of solar ultraviolet radiation.

He said preserving the ozone layer was vital to food security, climate stability and efforts to address global warming.

The theme for the 2026 World Ozone Day is “Global Action for a Cooler Planet.”

The United Nations General Assembly declared September 16 as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in 1994.
