Nollywood has lost one of its most recognisable faces, as veteran actor Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84.

The actor, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, leaving behind a career that spanned theatre, television and film.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, confirmed his death, describing the legendary actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” in his announcement.

For decades, Olu Jacobs commanded attention on screen with a presence that made him one of the most respected actors of his generation.

His career extended beyond Nollywood, with appearances in British television and international productions before he became a prominent figure in Nigeria’s growing film industry.

His contribution to Nigerian cinema earned him several honours and established him as one of the veterans whose work helped shape the industry.

News of his death comes after years of false reports about his passing circulated online, reports that were previously dismissed by his family.

Following the confirmation of his death, the family has asked the public, bloggers and social media users to respect their privacy as they come to terms with the loss.

Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, actress Joke Silva, and their children.
