Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi has weighed in on the conversation surrounding his wife, Margaret Obi, and her luxury lifestyle, following reactions to one of her recent fashion appearances.
Margaret, a former Anambra First Lady, has recently attracted attention online over her fashion choices, with the conversation gaining momentum after she was spotted with an expensive luxury handbag.
The development comes shortly after she celebrated her birthday on September 9.
She was also recently seen in a video showing off a new wig, which drew reactions from social media users.
However, it was her appearance with a Hermès Kelly 35 Malachite Shiny Porosus Crocodile bag with gold hardware that generated further discussion.
The luxury handbag is reportedly valued at about £131,938.81, a figure that prompted mixed reactions among Nigerians online.
While some people defended Margaret, arguing that she has the right to spend her legitimately earned money as she wishes, others questioned the need for such an expensive fashion item.
For some, the discussion went beyond the handbag and centred on the perceived contrast between Margaret’s luxury fashion choices and the image of financial prudence often associated with her husband.
Peter Obi subsequently weighed in on the matter, making it clear that he does not determine how his wife spends her personal income.
He reportedly noted that Margaret earns her own money and is entitled to make decisions about how she spends it.
He added that his concern would arise if public funds were being used to finance such personal purchases.
His comments have since generated further reactions, with some Nigerians supporting his position that Margaret’s personal spending should not automatically be linked to her husband’s political career.
Others, however, argued that as the wife of a prominent political figure, Margaret’s lifestyle will naturally attract public attention, particularly when it appears different from the values associated with her husband’s public image.
The discussion has consequently moved beyond the handbag itself, raising broader questions about personal wealth, luxury, political image and the expectations placed on the families of public figures.
For Margaret Obi, what began as another luxury fashion appearance has now become a subject of wider public conversation, with her husband’s response adding another dimension to the debate.
