NiMet forecasts sunshine, thunderstorms across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a mix of sunshine, cloudiness and thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday.

NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, forecast sunny skies with a few patches of clouds over the northern region on Monday. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rains are expected over parts of Taraba State in the afternoon and evening.

The agency predicted a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine over the North-Central region throughout the forecast period.

“For the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is expected over the region with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

“Later during the day, there are prospects of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states,’’ it said.

For Tuesday, NiMet forecast sunny skies with a few patches of clouds over the northern region, with isolated thunderstorms and light to moderate rains expected over parts of Taraba State later in the day.

The agency predicted a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine over the central and southern regions.

It also envisaged thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo and Delta states later in the day.

On Wednesday, NiMet predicted sunny skies with a few patches of clouds over the northern region and a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine over the North-Central region.

For the southern region, it forecast cloudy weather with intervals of sunshine and prospects of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states later in the day.

“Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur, the public should take adequate precaution and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision.

‘’Driving under heavy rain should be avoided. Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets. Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees.

‘’Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations,’’ the agency said.

NiMet said temperatures were expected to remain high, potentially causing thermal discomfort, and advised the public to wear breathable clothing, stay in well-ventilated environments and remain hydrated.
