President Bola Tinubu will join world leaders to address the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) General Debate on Wednesday, Sept. 23, in New York.

Tinubu is scheduled as the 10th speaker during the morning session on the second day of the high-level debate, which will hold from Sept. 22 to Sept. 28 at the UN headquarters.

He is expected to speak between 11:30 a.m. and noon New York time, corresponding to 4:30 p.m. Nigerian time.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will open the debate on Sept. 22, followed by U.S. President Donald Trump as the host country’s leader.

The theme for UNGA 81, to be presided over by Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh, is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

Tinubu is expected to participate in several high-level meetings and side events on climate action, sea-level rise and pandemic preparedness.

He is also expected to meet with outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim, confirmed Tinubu’s attendance, saying the president would use the platform to showcase his administration’s reforms and seek international support for regional border policing.

Ibrahim also said Tinubu could meet with Trump on the sidelines of the assembly.

The UN General Assembly opened on Sept. 8, while the high-level general debate is scheduled for Sept. 22 to Sept. 28.
