The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to train corps members in Edo State on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion, with five vehicles approved for free conversion during the orientation course.
The NYSC State Coordinator in Edo, Mr Fasina Adedotun, disclosed this on Friday at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Okada.
He said the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiative would visit the camp with a team to train corps members on CNG conversion.
According to him, five vehicles have been approved for conversion from petrol to CNG at a cost of N1.5 million each, with beneficiaries not required to pay.
Adedotun said 1,996 corps members, comprising 904 males and 1,092 females, had been registered in the state as of Thursday night. He added that some corps members initially deployed to Lagos were redeployed to Edo for the orientation exercise.
He urged the corps members to remain disciplined, embrace learning and build meaningful relationships throughout their service year, noting that the NYSC scheme promotes national integration and contributes to development across the state’s 18 local government areas.
The coordinator also highlighted the scheme’s Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers, which provides free medical outreach in remote communities, and the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which equips youths and women with vocational skills.
He commended the Edo State Government for providing buses to transport corps members to their places of primary assignment after the orientation programme.
Declaring the orientation course open, Gov. Monday Okpebholo, represented by the Director of Youths in the State Ministry of Youth Affairs, Mr Anthony Irabor, assured corps members of the government’s commitment to their welfare and security.
He encouraged them to explore opportunities in agriculture, education, technology, entrepreneurship and tourism, while urging them to respect their host communities and contribute to the state’s social and economic development.
The corps members were later sworn in by the Chief Judge of Edo, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, represented by the Deputy Chief Registrar, Mr Aibeku Ihenyen.
