The Nigeria Police Force says it will deploy 15,000 personnel to provide security for the Aug. 15 governorship election in Osun State.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the election, Samuel Etaifo, disclosed this at a news conference in Osogbo on Wednesday.
Etaifo said a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) and an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) would also be deployed to supervise election security operations.
He explained that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, deployed him to Osun two weeks before the election after assessing the security situation and observing rising political tension in the state.
According to him, the police have also deployed 16 units of the Mobile Police Force to maintain peace, reassure residents and ensure a peaceful, free and credible election.
Etaifo warned that anyone found violating the Electoral Act, regardless of status or political affiliation, would be arrested and prosecuted.
He expressed confidence in the security measures put in place and urged residents, political parties and other stakeholders to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful governorship election.
