The Chairman of the FCT Golf Association, Akabom Enebong, has introduced the Head of Service of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Nancy Nathan, to golf as part of efforts to promote women’s participation and grassroots development of the sport.
Nathan’s first golf training took place at the TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, Abuja.
Enebong said involving decision-makers was key to expanding golf across the FCT, adding that the association was deliberately encouraging more women to take up the sport because of its numerous health, educational and career opportunities.
He noted that many sports scholarships available to women in Nigeria remained untapped and said increased participation would promote healthy living, leadership and access to educational opportunities.
The association chairman also highlighted plans to establish a Golf STEM Academy in schools across the FCT to combine golf with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
According to him, integrating sports with education would improve learning outcomes and attract greater sponsorship while raising a new generation of academically successful golfers.
Enebong appealed to corporate organisations and development partners to support the initiative through sponsorship and youth development programmes.
Nathan said she accepted the invitation after learning about the health and recreational benefits of golf, describing her first training session as exciting and physically rewarding.
She encouraged more women in the FCT to embrace the sport, commended the association for changing the perception that golf is only for the wealthy, and pledged support for initiatives that promote youth development, healthy lifestyles and women’s participation in sports.
