Egyptian pharmaceutical company, Utopia Pharmaceuticals, says it plans to establish a drug manufacturing plant in Abia to serve Nigeria and the West African market.
The company’s founder, Kamel Muhamed, said the proposed investment was part of its African expansion strategy and would position Nigeria as a regional hub for pharmaceutical production. He added that the firm already operates under an existing MoU between Egypt and NAFDAC and had implemented similar projects in other African countries.
Gov. Alex Otti welcomed the proposal, describing local manufacturing as key to Abia’s industrialisation agenda. He said the investment would create jobs, boost economic activities and promote technology transfer.
Otti assured the investors of the state’s support and advised them to consider the Ukwa axis for the project because of its gas resources, reliable electricity and available land. He also directed the Commissioner for Health to work with the company to facilitate the investment.
