Security guard jailed 12 months for stealing church member’s phone

An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, on Friday sentenced a 35-year-old church security guard, Abiodun Ajetomobi, to a term of 12 months imprisonment for allegedly stealing a mobile phone belonging to a church member.

The convict was charged on one-count of stealing.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following his plea, the Magistrate, Mrs A. T. Oyediji, found him guilty of the charge, and accordingly convicted him.

She sentenced him to a term of 12 months imprisonment for stealing.

The court, however, gave the convict an option of two-months community service, in lieu of custodial sentence.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Foluke Adedosu , the convict who resides at Iwo road, Ibadan, works as security guard at Mercy Camp Praying ground at Osengere, New Ife /Ibadan Expressway.

He was said to have committed the offence on May 28, at the praying ground.

Adedosu said that a complainant, one Busari Qadri, a virtually impaired person, had entrusted his phone in care of the convict, to power in his office.

She said that the convict instead, absconded with the phone to an unknown destination, depriving the complainant of his ability to reach family and friends.

According to the prosecutor, the police eventually tracked and arrested the convict.

The offence contravenes the provision of section 390 (9) of the Criminal Law of Oyo State 2000.
