Zimbabwean footballer Divine Lunga has survived a gun attack in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The 31-year-old defender was reportedly driving through the inner-city suburb of Hillbrow on July 5 when an unidentified gunman opened fire on his vehicle.
Lunga, who plays for Zimbabwe’s national team and South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, escaped unharmed in the incident.
South African police confirmed the attack and said investigations were ongoing.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said authorities were investigating a case of attempted murder, adding that no arrests had been made.
She did not provide further details on the incident.
However, local media reports said Lunga was travelling to church with his younger brother when they came under attack.
According to the reports, the pair were driving through Hillbrow when the suspect allegedly opened fire on their vehicle, apparently mistaking the footballer for an undercover police officer.
Lunga has made 21 appearances for Zimbabwe’s national team and was part of the squad during the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign.
The defender joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 and has since helped the club win four domestic league titles, as well as its second CAF Champions League title in May.
Neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor Zimbabwe’s national team has officially commented on the shooting.
However, the Warriors, as Zimbabwe’s national team is known, shared a photograph of Lunga in a prayer position on social media with the caption: “In God we trust” alongside his name.
