Erling Haaland scored a brace as Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 on Sunday to secure a historic place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals and end the five-time champions’ campaign.
Brazil dominated possession in the opening stages and were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead before half-time after winning a penalty following a foul inside Norway’s penalty area.
However, Bruno Guimarães failed to convert from the spot, sending his effort off target as Norway escaped the danger and went into the break with the score level.
Norway grew into the match after the restart, with Martin Ødegaard controlling play in midfield while Antonio Nusa repeatedly troubled Brazil’s defence with his pace and attacking runs.
The breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Nusa delivered a precise cross that Haaland headed past goalkeeper Alisson.
Brazil pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Norway remained disciplined at the back and continued to threaten on the counter-attack through Haaland.
The Norwegian striker doubled his tally in the 89th minute after taking advantage of hesitation in Brazil’s defence before calmly slotting the ball past Alisson.
Brazil pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty following a late foul, but there was not enough time left to mount a comeback.
The victory sent Norway into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winners of the Round of 16 clash between England and Mexico.
Haaland’s two goals also boosted his chances in the race for the Golden Boot, further highlighting his importance to the Norwegian side.
For Brazil, managed by Carlo Ancelotti, the defeat brought an end to their bid for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title.
