The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has taken custody of 6,778.5 kilogrammes of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, intercepted at the Apapa Port in Lagos.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, described the seizure as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking and a testament to effective collaboration among security agencies.
Represented by the Director of Seaport Operations, Ibinabo Archie-Abia, Marwa said the drugs were intercepted during a joint examination of two containers by NDLEA operatives, the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies.
He said the seizure followed months of intelligence gathering and cooperation involving the NDLEA, the Nigeria Customs Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Marwa noted that the drug consignments were routed through multiple countries in an attempt to evade detection before they were eventually intercepted in Lagos.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to identifying, arresting and prosecuting those behind the shipment, as well as tracing and confiscating assets linked to the illicit trade.
The NDLEA chairman also commended the security agencies involved for their professionalism and cooperation, describing the operation as a strong example of successful inter-agency and international collaboration against organised crime.
