First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to infuse African culture into their Christmas celebrations as a deliberate way to strengthen children’s self-esteem and sense of identity.
She, specifically, urged Nigerians to embrace and project African culture during the celebrations.
Tinubu said there was a need for cultural ownership in festive storytelling, dressing and family traditions.
According to her, many Christmas storybooks and symbols predominantly feature Western characters, especially white Santas, which can lead children to believe that excellence and beauty are tied to foreign identities.
“African children must see themselves reflected in the stories and imagery surrounding Christmas, as such representation builds pride and confidence from an early age,” she said.
The First Lady explained that her passion for culture informed the development of an African-themed Christmas storybook for young readers.
She said the book was designed to help Nigerian children recognise that they too are “the standard.”
Tinubu added that cultural pride had played a significant role in her own personal development, noting that understanding one’s roots enhances self-worth and resilience.
She, therefore, urged parents and educators to expose children to local fabrics, foods and traditional values.
According to her, these cultural elements help children appreciate their heritage even as they aspire to global opportunities.
The First Lady also called on Nigerians to cultivate a spirit of generosity, saying the coming year should be dedicated to supporting the less privileged.
She noted that giving should not be reserved for times of abundance, adding that true compassion is shown when people share what they have, no matter how little.
Tinubu further emphasised the importance of humility, warning that those who rise without staying grounded may “fall like Humpty Dumpty.”
On national security, she commended the Federal Government for its swift response to recent cases of child abduction, describing it as one of the fastest rescue operations ever recorded in the country.

She explained the biblical essence of Jesus Christ’s birth and encouraged them to share love and gifts during the season.
