The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kebbi Command, on Tuesday, engaged stakeholders on misconceptions and promotion of public awareness on road safety rules and regulations.
Mrs Rukayya Zakaria, the state FRSC Sector Commander, said at the meeting in Birnin Kebbi, that the forum was also designed to engage stakeholders on road safety operations in the state.
“This stakeholders’ meeting is aimed at addressing areas of misunderstanding of road safety issues, and to make clarifications on the rudiments of road safety rules and regulations.
“Road safety is everybody’s business. We are here, as stakeholders, to discuss issues that concern road safety and clarify any misconceptions about our modus operandi,” she said.
Zakaria noted that the corps remained committed to reducing to the barest minimum the challenges it had faced since inception.
Speaking on the effects of drugs on driving, Assistant Commandant of Narcotics (ACN), Ibrahim Kangiwa, said that drugs were substances capable of altering the behaviour of users, including drivers.
“Drugs affect a driver’s ability to control a vehicle.
“There is need to enlighten the public on the dangers of drug-influenced driving.
“Drivers must be cautious about what they take before embarking on a journey,” Kangiwa said.
In his lecture on “The Dangers of Mixed Overloading”, the Chief Route Commander, Malam Yahaya Muhammad, described overloading as one of the major causes of road crashes in the state.
“The dangers of mixed overloading cannot be overemphasised. It has more negative effects than positive, economically, socially and commercially.
“It can lead to fatalities and devastation. It causes road crash risks, affects vehicle control, stresses tyres and often leads to brake failures, as well as unclear sights,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the stakeholders’ engagement formed part of the activities marking the 2025 Ember Months campaign with the theme: “Take Responsibility for Your Safety, Stop Distracted Driving.”
The stakeholders comprised representatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Department of State Security Service and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.Others are personnel of FRSC, officials of National Union of Road Transport Workers, Special Marshalls, and media organisations
