The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that no life was lost in a lone gas tanker accident that occurred at Chisco Bus Stop, inward Ikate, along the Lekki–Epe Expressway.
The LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency received distress calls through its toll-free emergency lines at about 5:58 a.m., and immediately activated the state’s emergency response plan from its Lekki Base.
He said on arrival of the LASEMA Response Team at 6:17 a.m., an 80-tonne SINO truck, laden with multiple gas cylinders, was found to have fallen sideways in a lone accident at the location.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by reckless driving by the truck driver, which led to the vehicle crashing into the road median and obstructing about 50 per cent of the road,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He said no injuries or fatalities were recorded in the incident.
Oke-Osanyintolu noted that LASEMA Response Team had conducted a risk assessment of the scene and implemented safety and control measures to prevent secondary incidents.
He added that traffic management measures were also put in place to ease congestion along the corridor while recovery operations were ongoing.
“Efforts are currently ongoing to recover the fallen tanker and restore normalcy to the affected section of the road. Necessary safety measures have been activated to ensure a smooth recovery operation,” he added.
Responders at the scene are LASEMA Response Team, Lekki Base Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority Lagos Concession Company officials and the Nigeria Police Force, Maroko Division.
He said recovery operations were still ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
