The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Zamfara chapter, has expressed its readiness to complement Gov Dauda Lawal’s administration’s policy in promoting girl-child education in the state.
Alhaji Sama’ila Husaini, state Chairman, ALGON, disclosed this in Gusau on Tuesday when he received a delegation from the Media Advocacy Team of the World bank-funded project ‘Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE).
Husaini also assured of the association’s readiness to collaborate with state AGILE office to enhance girl-child education and promoting future of adolescent girls in the state.
“At ALGON level, we are determined to invest more in girl-child education by encouraging parents to send their girl-child to school.
”At various levels, we embarked on various projects for massive renovations of some girls’ secondary schools in line with state government’s policies to revive the education sector in the state,” he said.
The ALGON chairman lamented the increasing number of out-of-school children in the state, and attributed the challenges to various factors like insecurity, poverty and lack of awareness and negligence from parents and other stakeholders
He called for a collective response towards reducing number of out of school children especially the adolescent girls in the state
“Insecurity is the majority reasons for increasing poverty among our people, vulnerability among boys and girls.
“Such factors resulted in displacement of several communities, with the victims mainly girls and women,” he said.
Husaini, who is the Chairman of Zurmi Local Government Council also, gave assurance that his office would continue to partner with AGILE to promote public enlightenment on access to education.
According to him, as leaders we have no option than to work towards tackling these challenges.
“We have many plans at various levels across the 14 local government areas of the state to complement various education programs initiated by the Gov Lawal’s administration in the state.
Earlier, the leader of the advocacy team, Malam Nasiru Biyabiki said the visit was to advocate for re-enrolment, retention and completion of secondary education by adolescent girls in Zamfara.
Biyabiki noted that the advocacy team had earlier visited Maru and Zurmi emirate councils to seek for traditional and religious leaders support to girl-child education in the state
