Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has issued a clear directive to sports federations, urging them to prioritize the development of sports by organizing more domestic tournaments and hosting continental championships. dikko made the call on thursday in Abuja during the closing ceremony of the 2025 CAVB Under-18 boys and girls Beach Volleyball Continental Championship.
Underscoring the importance of such events, the chairman emphasized that they are crucial for nurturing the next generation of athletes. he stated that the continental championship, specifically being an under-18 tournament, is all about development and building a strong foundation for the future of sports in the country.
Dikko’s message is a strategic push for federations to create a more robust and active sporting calendar, essential for identifying and grooming young talent.
He said the event is aligned with the vision of hosting as many tournaments as possible to provide opportunities for athletes.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the women’s category, Nigeria dominated, finishing first and second, respectively.
In the male category, Gambia emerged as champions in the men’s category, followed by DR Congo, while Nigeria secured third and fourth positions
Dikko said that the event aligns with the vision of hosting as many tournaments as possible to provide opportunities for athletes.
“We are quite delighted that the athletes have qualified for tournaments abroad to Qatar,” he said.
He encouraged all federations to follow suit by hosting domestic sports and trying to host as many events as possible.
Dikko expressed excitement and delight over the championship’s outcome.
“As usual, the women never disappointed us, and it’s still the women who brought the gold medals for Nigeria.
“We also congratulate the men; they came second. They should try to do better next time again to be able to match up with the women,” he said.
“I must congratulate my brother, President of the federation, Musa Nimrod, for what he has been doing.
“This is a very human effort; a considerable number of African countries are here, and Nigeria is blessed forever,” he said.
Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, Burundi, Zambia, Gambia, Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, DR Congo, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire participated in the championship.
The championship, which started on Aug. 1, is expected to end on Aug. 7.
