The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) are set to honour the first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday (today) for her outstanding contributions to the sport.
Musa Nimrod, the president of the NVBF, made the announcement to newsmen during the ongoing 2025 CAVB Beach Volleyball u-18 Continental Championship at the Jabi Lake in Abuja. he praised the first lady for her dedication and support, which have been instrumental in the development of volleyball across the country.
The gesture is a recognition of her patronage and commitment to sports, particularly as the federations celebrate youth talent and future champions.
He said that her support, particularly during the 2025 Africa women’s Club Championship in Nigeria in April.
“She graced both the opening and closing ceremonies, serving as a powerful morale booster for young female athletes.
“Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu played a huge role in supporting the game of volleyball, especially during the Africa Club Championship.
“Her attendance at the ceremonies uplifted the morale of the girl-child and showed that their efforts are being recognised at the highest levels.
“The positive impact of the Renewed Hope Initiative, championed by the First Lady, in inspiring young athletes across the country.
“Our teams have shown remarkable discipline, strength, and patriotism.
“These results are not by chance, they are the outcome of years of planning, investment, and unwavering support from key stakeholders, most especially the First Lady.
“That is why we made her our Patron. She has become a beacon of encouragement for our young girls and boys.
‘This honour is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for believing in the potential of Nigerian youth,” he said.
Nimrod said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has brought a renewed sense of hope and energy into the Nigerian sports sector, particularly for youth development.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the final match in the female category of the ongoing championship, Nigeria in pool I will face Nigeria in pool II at 3pm today at Jabi Lake, Abuja.
In the male category DR Congo and Gambia will slug it out for the boys’ title, while Nigeria I and Nigeria III will play in the third-place match.
The championship which started on Aug. 1, is expected to end on Aug. 7.
