Prof. Abdulkarim Sabo, Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Dutse (FUD), has called on graduates to explore all avenues for self-employment by enrolling in skills acquisition programmes.
Speaking at the university’s 8th and 9th combined convocation ceremonies on Saturday in Dutse, Sabo also urged the graduates to avoid drug abuse and remain security conscious.
“Since the university has armed you with academic and entrepreneural skills, you should shun drug abuse and be security conscious wherever you find yourselves.
“You should also explore all possibilities for self-employment through various states and federal government employment programmes so that one day you will be employers of labour rather than seeking for meager salary paying government jobs,” he said.
Sabo said the university graduated 4,277 students, with 2,002 for the 2022/2023 and 2,275 for the 2023/2024 academic sessions, respectively.
The VC said that for the 2022/2023 academic session, 99 graduates obtained first class, 544 second class upper, 879 second class lower and 321 third class.
While 110 graduates got first class; 1,271 second class upper, 2,034 second class lower and 559 third class in the 2023/2024 academic session.
“Since its establishment 14 years ago, this university has witnessed a remarkable academic and physical development in all ramifications.
“At inception in the 2011/2012 academic session, the university started with five academic departments and three faculties, but as of today, we have 45 academic departments and 10 faculties.
“Equally, the students’ population has steadily increased from 202 in 2011/2012 academic session to 18,000,” he said.
