The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), has donated 100 chairs and desks to Asagba Mixed Secondary School in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Presenting the furniture on Thursday, Azinge said the donation was aimed at supporting government efforts to enhance education in the community.
The traditional ruler also unveiled 300 textbooks for three primary schools: Oneh, Ahabam, and Abu Ator, with 100 copies each to boost learning for young pupil.
The News Agency Nigeria (NAN) reports that the royal father saw the need for the intervention, when he paid an unscheduled inspection visit to the schools three months ago.
NAN also reports that during the visit, he promised to intervene, after he observed that the classrooms were over populated and some were not in use due to the lack of chairs and desks.
He promised to continue to show concern over the condition of all the schools in Asaba to ensure they remained standardised centres of learning.
The traditional ruler emphasised the importance of community involvement in achieving quality education.
According to him, the burden of achieving quality and good education should not be left for government alone.
He commended the Asaba Welfare and Endowment Committee for their efforts in making the donation possible.
He urged the schools to put the items into good use to justify the spirit behind the intervention.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, the Provost of the Federal College of Education (Tech.) Asaba,akw Prof. Josephine Anene-Okea, said the committee was mandated to go for the chairs and desks in order to depopulate many of the classrooms and enhance learning.
Anene-Okeakwa also said that the textbooks were donated because it was discovered that the pupils of the selected schools were sharing books in their classes, which was not healthy for learning.
She thanked the Asagba for the laudable gesture which, she said, would impact positively on the schools, and urged the staff, students and pupils not to take the donations for granted.
Receiving the items, the Principal of Asagba Mixed Secondary School, Asaba, Mrs Stella Ajufo, thanked the Asagba and committee for the wonderful gesture and promised that they would be put to good use.
