The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has advised commercial drivers operating in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to keep waste baskets in their vehicles to make the territory clean.
Alhaji Baba Lawan, the Director of the board made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
Lawan said it became imperative for commercial drivers to put waste baskets in their vehicles as many commuters threw empty canned drinks, plastics, and papers wastes among others through the windows.
“This habit is also common with some private drivers and it is unacceptable. Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria, we must make it clean.
“We have not relented in educating and creating awareness on how to make Abuja a clean city and the best ways of disposing wastes,” he said.
Lawan said school children were not left out of the campaign, adding that making Abuja a clean city should be a collective effort.
“We cannot run after commercial drivers to arrest and prosecute them in our mobile courts for littering the road because more sensitisation through the media is still needed.
“In some countries, government install cameras everywhere to monitor people littering the environment, but we do not have such facility that is why we are sensitising Abuja residents on how to make Abuja a clean city,” he said.
