A Professor of Psychology at the University of Ibadan, Remi Alarape, has urged the Federal Government to tighten drug control policies to curb rising cases of drug abuse nationwide.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ota, Ogun State, Alarape stressed the urgent need for greater public awareness on the harmful effects of drug misuse.
His comments were made in commemoration of World Drug Day, observed annually on June 26 to promote global efforts against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
The international day was established by the United Nations in 1987.
Alarape emphasised the need for the FG to strengthen drug control policies and global actions to combat drug-related problems.
According to him, partnering with the media, schools, and Non-Governmental Organisations to educate citizens on drug risks will go a long way to create the needed awareness.
“We need to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
“In addition, we need to equip officers with skills to handle drug cases ethically and effectively,” he said.
The don urges the government to increase funding for rehabilitation centres, thus ensuring adequate treatment of drug addicts across the country.
He underscored the importance of encouraging organisations and individuals to collaborate with the governments in the prevention and rehabilitation efforts.
He stressed the need for youth empowerment initiatives through the provision of vocational training and job opportunities that would deter them from drug involvement.
The professor noted that a drug-free society starts with collective action, government policies, community support, and individual choices.
