The United States’ national women team asserted their superiority on Sunday when they won the Women World Cup for the fourth time.
They defeated Netherlands 2-0 to to claim its fourth World Cup.
Their first goal came via a VAR-prompted penalty kick, converted by Megan Rapinoe, while Rose Lavelle got the second goal some 10 minutes after – both in the second half.
Based on the feat, the US team are now the first team to appear in three consecutive finals, and coach Jill Ellis has become the first coach to win back-to-back World Cups in the men’s or women’s game since Italy’s Vittorio Pozzo in the 1930s.
Reports say the team will be welcomed home with a ticker tape parade down New York City’s “Canyon of Heroes” on Wednesday morning, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced. US First lady Melania Trump, has already tweeted a congratulatory message to the team.
