The Police Command in Kano State has arrested 22 armed robbery suspects in Dorayi area of Gwale Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, disclosed this while addressing the residents of Dorayi Karma on Thursday.
Gumel held a meeting with the people of Dorayi over issues of thuggery and criminal assault on innocent residents of the area.
Such acts had resuled to killing and maiming of people in the area, prompting the Police boss to tag those arrested as armed robbers and not political thugs.
He said already, 30 other criminals were on the wanted list of the command and advised their parents and relatives to hand them over to the police before they were caught.
“We cannot tolerate thugs hiding under the guise of ‘daba’, fighting to cause unrest in the state, and let me warn that parents who attempt to come forward seeking bail for their arrested children would also be arrested for complicity,” he said.
He said an anti-robbery squad would be established in Dorayi Karama to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in criminal activities.
“We will provide the squad with modern working facilities to ensure optimal performance.
“I have already ordered the release of 1,000 canisters of tear gas to the area and hundreds of armed policemen would be deployed to pave the way for the arrest of all those behind criminal activities in the area.
Community leaders of the area called on the police to shoot anybody caught weilding arms and ammunition among the citizens.
However, the commissioner insisted that those behind the assault on the community were armed robbers and not common thugs, saying that investigation had revealed that they were armed robbers.
“Already 22 heavily armed persons were arrested and 30 are declared wanted by the Police,” he said.
“We would not tolerate seeing parents supporting their children undertaking crimes against innocent indigenes,” Gumel warned.
